If Lourdes has been on your heart, you’ve probably asked the same quiet questions many parents do:
Will my kids be bored?
Are they too young—or too old?
Will this feel meaningful… or overwhelming?
Those questions don’t mean you’re unsure.
They mean you’re taking a family pilgrimage seriously.
I’ve visited Lourdes both before becoming a parent and later with my daughter, my husband, and my parents. What surprised me most wasn’t what my child learned—it was what she noticed.
At one point she paused and said, “I forgot she was a real person.”
She meant St. Bernadette.
That moment didn’t come from a lesson or a schedule. It came from being in a place where faith felt real instead of forced.
The Biggest Misunderstanding About Lourdes With Kids
Many parents assume Lourdes requires children to:
-
stand quietly for long periods
-
appreciate deep prayer on demand
-
experience pilgrimage the same way adults do
That’s rarely how it works.
For children, meaning often shows up through movement, sensory experiences, and questions that surface later. The challenge isn’t bringing kids who are curious or active—it’s expecting pilgrimage to look the same for them as it does for us.
It’s Not About the Right Age — It’s About the Right Season
One of the most important things I’ve learned is this:
Lourdes isn’t about the right age.
It’s about the right season for your family.
Some families thrive there early.
Some benefit from waiting.
And some need support to make the experience peaceful instead of overwhelming.
There’s no prize for going “too soon.”
There is wisdom in discernment.
The Moment I Didn’t Expect
I assumed our most meaningful moment would happen at the Grotto or inside one of the Basilicas.
It didn’t.
It happened high above the town, overlooking the Pyrenees—walking, resting, and simply being together. No agenda. No checklist.
Pilgrimage often works on families in the pauses, not the plans.
